Up until for so many years of curating, collecting and listening upon many compilations and set compositions - there has never been a time for exploring something that's been largely ignored in the industry of compilation design. Or perhaps, producing something as a concept that would be considered largely controversial yet sensitively relevant for everyone; if only we allow ourselves take a step back and remain calm, open, liberal and most important of all - progressive.
This subject matter; or should it be labelled as subject of interest - first derived as an idea to me during early 2009. It was during that time I was giving myself a chance to "experiment", to study and curate something that I have never done or explored before. Or at the very least - certainly a subject of interest that's commonly and overly protected, shamed, and even frowned upon in the society we live in that (supposedly) favouring the above attributes - calm, open and liberal.
I wanted to produce and conceptualise a project that sonically illustrates this contradiction. Contradiction and differences between beliefs of acquiring, defining and sustaining physical intimacy. Physical intimacies; developed as an expectation out of two beliefs - the conservative and the progressive. Whether those beliefs are constructed and carried out since childhood and remains unchanged throughout one's adulthood (as conservative beliefs), or beliefs constructed out of progressivity - one that remains aware of both sides, but keeps ever so changing in order to satisfy not for instilled/generational expectations; but of inner instinct and honest affirmation through time.
But how open and tolerant we are really when it comes to accepting the differences simply as part of humanity? The collective state of affairs in the world today are simply biased, one-sided and over-protectionist in its' views - their views. There is little, if at all; any sense of liberal respect over one's own belief in any (supposedly) free society.
This is the core of the project's goal; as a broad and difficult attempt in addressing the above question. Illustrating and celebrating an instinctual response out of simply being human; as a gentle reminder of our own inner need. Of all things misinterpreted - the physical manifestation of intimacy. We do things in the name of profit; more often than not - relentlessly until we've reached a satisfactory end to our other needs and wants. As a result from all the different "priorities" we believe in - we have unknowingly distorted our own perception in questioning intimacy in general - its' importance and relevance to us whether we recognise this simply as a "want" or a "need", or even something that's not relevant at all.
The overall level of tolerance whether we recognise physical "intimacy" as something we should conservatively defend and protect (as a secured "need") or something we should expressively and progressively share (as an instinctual "want") remains a blur to many people. This compilation is designed with an honest, sincere frame of mind in the hope to clear away all that politics and barriers of discomfort by simply accepting it as part of being human.
Whenever we wish to experience or approaching any physical context of intimacy with the other half; regardless of one's own upbringing which brought his or her personal and political beliefs along with it - is consequently and ultimately - neither right or wrong by way of nature. Throughout four disc/s in total, MOMENT™ 02 : Lady - does precisely that - delivering a sense of "neutrality" - of intimate sonic inspirations that irrespective of your gender and orientation / alignments - there is something for each and everyone of various political beliefs of intimacy; either inherited or acquired.
The goal may seem difficult enough to accomplish, but outsourcing the influences and crafting together just the right, subtle & respectful yet sensitive tonality; adds an entirely different problem to solve. This compilation had set me forth upon a need to differentiate its' tonality away from what the rest have commonly portrayed and expressed as predictable, explicit, and straightforward feel of its intended message. And hence, derived a need for me to set a different goal - not to produce another so called "erotic" lounge compilation entirely within a direct, explicit manner; but more to communicate the surrounding aspects of it. Something to remind and to tell ourselves in general that maintaining an open understanding and awareness of accepting these inner "needs" and "wants" are ultimately important; regardless of what political beliefs and /or levels of conservative upbringing of an individual.
The feeling of being wanted by someone else; through either conditional or (un)conditional circumstances is incomparable to anything else as a socio-psychological reaction. We have long neglected our own self-prophesizing needs for redefining what love & intimacy means to an individual; as it is inherently - the only thing which makes such a person to be respected as a human being. It is at very least, more than everything else - what makes us happy. And of all, what makes us feel accepted and wanted from someone else we've never thought possible.
Overall, this project is set to awaken and to remind our own senses that any forms of acquiring intimacy; so long as it's expressed in a positively & ethically consenting environment - should never be criticised as either politically or stereotypically defined as "damaging", "wrong" or "inappropriate" by any or all external opinions.
Why should it be treated openly that way? Simply because nature itself dictates this as an instinct, and nothing as such as an acquired behaviour. It is a way of reminding us of our own inherent, natural law that it should be embraced and to be reminded in a gentle, subdued yet expressive manner. Regardless of your alignments, or how conservative or open and individualistic you are - this compilation shows and reassures no room for judgment.
Anything that is deemed "erotic" is highly personal and individual to many people. Either that is recognised and understood as a representative form of a direct, explicit act/s of interest (eg. direct visual form, fetish) or as a "lateral" way of personification through literature.
First comes the need to address what is common. There is more in the sea of what I would consider predictable for any compilation that possess a certain criteria that could be immediately classified as intimate or erotic. But the more compilations I researched and even purchased for direct insight and listening have proved my initial thoughts correct - there is a wide range of meanings and interpretations of what is considered an "erotic" sonic compilation, but very little of these I find do communicate in a sensitive, respectable sense.
The biggest challenge behind finding all the right influences all began from finding a compilation that underlies a sense of respect, but also one that is not shy to express itself in a confident manner. A sense of "expression" and "subtlety".
Hence, there is a word I came to a conclusion at the end of my own research - it's "balance". If there is one thing that I could draw a line of a certain sonic criteria that is considered universal; it must be of a certain quality or a feature to that piece of work that is neither too frontally aggressive in its' approach of demonstrating to a particular theme; but not too retrenched or regressive / too protective to prove any strong points or simply speaking; too "quiet" or vague.
And thus out of this expectation I set out to listen & gathered as many compilations within the means that I could afford in this project. Perhaps the only inspiration that left the biggest mark on this project is simply the La Perla / Private Show series. Simply because there is markedly level of versatility that almost anyone can relate to it.
Created and published by the very same prestigious lingerie designer brand; there is certainly something that caters a certain taste to everybody; in how their promo compilations are designed and catered. Their third & last volume; was specifically, one compilation that does it all.
It does it all in a sense that it respects, and acknowledges everyone's own implicit understanding of this inner needs & wants; certainly a rare feat in compilation design. It's not that it's rare in terms of (a fact) that it's out of print, that it's hard to get a copy of. But it's rare to find a compilation that not only communicates the essence of intimacy in its' whollistic manner, but also its' outstandingly directed and set composed storyline / journey of explaining every little aspect of that communication back to the audience; in a perfect, seamless atmosphere.
If there is one thing that stands out among its' own qualities - is its' respect of honouring the different meanings of intimacy stylistically coming from a range of different cultures & ethnicity. The listener will indefinitely find sonic references and inspirations which enables them to discover the diversity within the theme itself as inviting, insightful, soothing and most of all - exotic. Absolutely no other compilations I have personally come across do carry this diverse "cultural" tonal palette.
Whilst my options were running short due to financial reasons / one only other but just as significant as an inspiration - was Clara Hill's, self--art directed album released back in 2003. At its' time, it was exemplary in almost every way of album creation, song-writing & art-direction initiatives all from the singer herself. It was what provided me that last piece of the sonic + context inspiration needed for the re-branding the entire MOMENT™ project as well as providing a more elusive yet contemporary approach in addressing our inner wants & needs.
Out from hearing these few but significant inspirations that I thus concluded that in order for one to keep anything worthy as "memory"; it must impart some sort of implicit value genuinely, with authenticity, and most of all - inspiration. And I must somehow impart these qualities to truly make LADY the most elusive of all compilation project/s I've undertaken.
This project was originally planned; back then - strictly as a one-off single disc, single set composition focusing on covering the genres of ambient, and downtempo. Initially, the project has undergone at least three revisions of final, and was left as it was in May 2010. It was only until upon further listening and the gathering of more source materials that it was possible to extend this as a 3-disc "anniversary" edition; an idea first set in 2011 - featuring a new refined major set composition over the original first disc, as well as two entirely new sections - the special 5th Anniversary Edition and the Lady : In The Mix.
Lady : One / "Table for Two"
2013 Revision Edit
The first of the three entirely focuses upon "setting" and "preparing" the audience to comfortably sink into the context of the entire project. Mildly conservative in the way of tone, but rich in way of re-defining the emotive range of sensitivity for such a context - it is what I would consider the safest explanation of delivering the entirety of this MOMENT™ in a single set composition that almost anyone can easily and comfortably relate to. At least within a sonic manner that is immediately comfortable and hence, fit within a standard "conservative" context of intimacy.
Focusing upon the "conservative" genres - the Downtempo, Ambient and Nu-Jazz brings a more "simplified" scope behind the subject matter through a handful of carefully selected song/s; a sourcing & listening process which took almost a year alone before the very first "working" draft was completed in late 2009.
Lady : 5th Anniversary Edition
First envisioned as a rough idea in late 2011, the need to revisit this project was mainly to introduce something that's more "diverse" yet contemporary in tone. Something to accommodate the more complex, "progressive" sounds of intimacy. This portion of the project has taken two whole years of nothing else than refining, and listening and sourcing inspirations and materials themselves.
This second anniversary disc; was supposedly - designed and compiled to capture the complete elusiveness behind the overall subject matter - to its' fullest extent possible by experimenting volatile combinations of tone, and atmosphere.
This, only under my own opinion (as well as direction) - the part that best portrays the complex realism behind intimacy itself. It is at times experimental, yet at some point also harmonious. The reason for this is simply to correlate as well as to accommodate the varying, realistic complexity for understanding the physical needs & wants of intimacy. Less within a conservative, comfortable context, but more in a progressive, dynamic paradigm. All this through a broad sonic horizon. A sonic journey that's not meant to be absorbed & tread lightly, but created as an attempt to measure & testifies the listener's level of tolerance for understanding, approaching and ultimately - acceptance & awareness of this sensitive matter at heart.
Lady : In The mix
ORIGINAL (June 2013)
ALTERNATIVE / BROADCAST VERSION (OCTOBER 2013)
Of all things, the next and perhaps; the most time intensive and holds the most of all production and aesthetic value - is "In The Mix". If the second disc is meant to serve the more mature minded listeners, In The Mix: is the friendlier companion to both introduce and to end this project insightfully once and for all. It is to put it simply; an overall exhaustive attempt to combine together the conservative as well as the progressive sonic inspirations to form a more "acceptable" and "accessible" yet still highly private, listening experience.
The third disc; which in itself is comprised of two different versions; carries an aim to reach towards the broader range of audience through its' mainstream (note: not mainstream song selection) EDM genres; particularly within the realms of Deep Soulful House and Tech House (being the most difficult of all House sub-genres to handle). This section of the project took almost another entire year of constantly listening, replacing and refining its' set compositions; because of extremely difficult to find and to source the very few of such songs. The goal was to find that "elusive" base of songs that are not only soothing, but deeply imminent and relevant to the context at all times; yet concise and friendly enough without too much formality - which is commonly associated among the Deep House & Tech House sub genres.
The Original Version is; as I envisioned it - the complete and proper journey of understanding the fullest depth and extent of providing that alternative, surrounding important aspects of the subject matter. Deep, steady, consistent and insightful, all in a subdued manner. It took a total of eight months to develop, refine and finalise across two successive draft / final versions.
The Alternate / Broadcast Version; remains the most "novel" of all impressions. It is an exhaustive attempt turn what the Original Version has as a strength; and turns them something more vibrant and impactful. The more energetic, mainstream Soulful & Vocal sides of House was the very sole reason that I put my trust that this would be the version that I would use for promoting the visual, sub-project - The Background Timelapse Concept.
Lady : In The Mix /
BACKGROUND TIMELAPSE CONCEPT
Utilising the finished material of the Broadcast version, in mid 2013 a new creative sub project was envisioned; a visual promotional material to be delivered to the global audience for the very first time. The aim was to produce a self running background timelapse-animated concept that shows this sonic message as a full-length, background rendered journey.
Almost every conceivable knowledge & effort out of me as a creative individual - from understanding linear workflow principle in 3D modelling, rendering, compositing to minute colour corrections upon numerous editing session/s; all quickly added up to the total quota of hours in the gruelling set of month/s that followed. In addition to this, two full actual independent projects - logo animations for my initials' logotype as well as that of the MOMENT™ project itself - nothing were simply ignored.
With over more than 80 hours spent in the visualisation development of its' featured in all of its' aspects - it is also an exhaustive testimony to deliver something as an attempt that very little to no other so called self-promotional DJ mixes has tried so far - marrying the concept of a completely rendered background timelapse animated composition together with the sonic journey itself.
Design & Concept
If we are simply referring to the visual outlook of what is considered "erotic", then it's pretty simple - erotic simply for erotic's sake. Teaseful/dark bodouir photography or just simply suggestive. Job easily done. Innumerable number of examples have so far failed to communicate upon the diverse, intangible sides of this inner needs.
One of the great challenges in this project was to somehow invite curiosity from the audience but somewhat in a respectful, yet conservative & mature outlook. Any sort of creative work that demands "innovation" or "originality" in portraying either a "need" or "wants" within the realms of sex and intimacy - is an incredibly difficult task. Or at least, proved to be almost impossible in respecting and maintaining relevance to the sensitive subject matter without being mistaken as either a "fetish" or simply to achieve that tongue-in-cheek personality / aka commercial advertising.
Back in mid 2009, there's a need to establish a set of inspirations over what could be classified as objects; or as different characters to help re-defining the volatile, as well as fragile characteristics of what intimacy is; in an insightful, yet comfortable manner. Because these two keywords are what is commonly associated by many people; especially those coming from a conservative background & upbringing. These two keywords (Volatile & Fragile) quickly became the sole primary keywords for me to keep in mind when composing the illustrative layout.
So what does these words volatile and fragile means to me? From my opinion - it's a set of behaviours that is both unexpected and dynamic. To really investigate where or how this behaviour comes from, I turned towards an influence to the 4th of the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac - the Rabbit. Far more than just our usual; socio-cultural definition in that the rabbit is an acquired icon for rapid / and ever-flourishing fertility - In scientific and biological definition - rabbits are; at any given time - are extremely timid and yet highly social and aggressive prey animals. It is precisely coming from this unpredictability sense; that I've decided to use them as the main character in the compositional layout.
As for the surrounding as well as the centre piece of the environment - the branches (which were 3D modelled and rendered) as well as the roses and the severed hands; completes the scene altogether to promote this sense of natural unpredictability; as what is commonly portrayed as our own contradictory behaviours at times in understanding, as well as accepting any form of physical intimacy in our lives.
